Providence English Private School
2026 – 2027
Approved for FS 2 – Year 13Providence English Private School (PEPS) is committed to nurturing internationally minded, socially responsible young people who understand their role as citizens of both the United Arab Emirates and the wider world. Rooted in the UAE's values of tolerance, coexistence and openness, our approach to Global Citizenship prepares students to engage thoughtfully with local and global communities.
Our aims are:
This policy is written to align with the following UAE national frameworks and priorities, and with the standards of the Council of International Schools (CIS), of which PEPS is a member:
In line with CIS International Accreditation Standard A3, PEPS defines global citizenship in terms specific to our own school community, rather than relying on a generic definition:
This definition is reviewed periodically by the Senior Leadership Team in consultation with staff, students and parents, and is intended to evolve as the school community reflects on what global citizenship means in its own context.
This policy applies to all students at PEPS, from FS 2 to Year 13, and is reflected in:
Teachers are responsible for embedding global citizenship themes into their subject teaching where appropriate, modelling respect for diversity, and supporting student-led initiatives related to community and global issues.
Staff and leaders are supported through ongoing professional development to build their own intercultural competency and understanding of the diverse cultural contexts represented within the school community, in line with CIS expectations for staff and leadership practice.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to:
Students are expected to treat all members of the school community with respect regardless of nationality, culture, religion or background, to engage constructively with learning about global issues, and to take an active part in community service opportunities offered by the school.
Ensures global citizenship is reflected in the school's calendar of events, curriculum planning and community partnerships, and that provision is evidenced and reviewed in line with CIS International Accreditation expectations.
The school fosters pride in and understanding of UAE culture, heritage, language and values, including through National Day, Flag Day, Commemoration Day and Martyrs' Day observances, and the integration of Arabic language, Islamic education and Social Studies curricula as mandated by the Ministry of Education.
With a student body drawn from many nationalities, PEPS actively celebrates cultural diversity through international days, cultural exhibitions, and cross-cultural learning projects. Discrimination of any kind — based on nationality, culture, religion, ethnicity or background — is not tolerated and will be addressed in line with the Behaviour & Discipline and Anti-Bullying Policies.
Beyond addressing discrimination when it occurs, PEPS takes a proactive approach to inclusion and equity: valuing the diverse characteristics and backgrounds of all students and staff, ensuring equity of opportunity across the school's many nationalities and language backgrounds, and building a culture of belonging in which students feel safe to explore issues of identity, difference and perspective. This includes ongoing staff and leadership development in intercultural competency, and regular review of school practices, materials and relationships through an I-DEA lens, in line with CIS International Accreditation standards.
Students are encouraged to understand their responsibility towards the environment, through curriculum links to the SDGs, sustainability-focused projects, and participation in relevant national environmental initiatives.
The school promotes active citizenship through student-led charitable initiatives, community service hours, and partnerships with local charitable and humanitarian organisations, encouraging students to translate awareness into action.
Students are supported to engage critically and empathetically with global issues — including poverty, human rights, conflict and migration — in an age-appropriate manner, developing the ability to consider multiple perspectives.
Opportunities such as Student Council, Model United Nations-style activities (where offered), and peer mentoring give students a platform to develop leadership and advocate for causes they care about.
Global citizenship is embedded not only in the written curriculum (Social Studies, Moral Education, Islamic Education) but also in cross-curricular teaching and learning practice, and in the informal and incidental curriculum — the everyday culture, relationships and climate of the school. Delivery is coordinated by the Senior Leadership Team in consultation with subject coordinators, and is periodically reviewed using CIS's Model and Continua for Global Citizenship and Intercultural Learning as a reflective tool for continuous improvement.
In line with CIS's expectation that schools evidence the impact of their global citizenship provision, PEPS gathers and reviews evidence including:
This evidence informs the annual review of this policy and the school's ongoing self-study for CIS International Accreditation.
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Senior Leadership Team, in consultation with subject coordinators for Social Studies and Moral Education, or sooner if required by changes in national curriculum, SPEA guidance, or CIS International Accreditation standards.
